  • National overview

    • Thanks to the generosity of 557 deceased organ donors, 1,438 Australians received a life-saving organ transplant in 2025.
    • In 2025, 53% of families consented to organ donation in the hospital, consistent with 2024.
    • Australia's registration rate dropped to 35%, down from 36% in 2024.
    • There were 230 living kidney donors in 2025, a 9% decrease compared to 2024.
    • There were 1,677 eye donors in 2025, a 1% decrease compared to 2024.
    • There were 332 tissue donors in 2025, a 6% increase compared to 2024.

     

    In 2025
    ~2,000 people on a waitlist for an organ transplant 
    ~14,000 people on dialysis for kidney failure, many who could benefit from a kidney transplant

    Since the national program first began in 2009, 20,907 people have received life-saving organ transplants from 7,501 deceased organ donors.

  • Deceased organ donation and transplant recipients 2000-2025

    • Between 2009 - 2019 the national program saw a 122% increase in deceased donation, resulting in an 81% increase in people receiving an organ transplant.
    • Over 2 years (2020 and 2021), there was a 23% reduction in deceased donation activity due to the impacts of COVID-19 (from 2019).
    • Since 2021, there has been continued recovery in organ donation.
