Sunday 15 November is Thank You Day, a day to acknowledge those who make organ and tissue donation possible – living and deceased organ and tissue donors, and their families.
Each year, thousands of lives are saved and transformed through organ and tissue donation.
Born with a complex congenital heart condition, Vic had his first heart surgery at just a few months old. He managed his condition as best he could throughout his early life, undergoing many procedures and 3 open heart surgeries. Vic was determined to live an active life despite his health challenges, and he developed a passion for cycling.
But when his health declined and everyday activities became increasingly difficult, he was faced with the reality that a heart transplant was his best chance for a healthier future.
While waiting for a heart transplant, Vic remained focused on spending time with his family, and holding onto hope for what life after a transplant could look like.
Since his transplant, Vic has embraced life in ways that had previously been out of reach. He has returned to work, is creating new memories with his family and has even written a memoir.
One of the simple pleasures he treasures most is being able to spend quality time with his son doing something they both love – cycling.
For Vic, the gift of a heart transplant has given him the chance to plan for the future – something he doesn't take for granted.
Vic carries deep gratitude for his donor and their family, whose generosity made his second chance possible.
