State Medical Director — Dr Bruce Powell
Dr Bruce Powell was appointed as the State Medical Director for DonateLife Western Australia in November of 2012. Dr Powell graduated from The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London in 1991 and, after his resident years, joined the Royal Navy as a medical officer, spending five years serving on ships and alongside the Royal Marines.
Dr Powell has had a varied and wide-ranging career including medical training, nephrology, anaesthesia and intensive care. He worked as a senior registrar in ICU in Fremantle Hospital in 2006, and subsequently returned to Australia in 2008, as Director of Intensive Care at Rockingham General Hospital, WA.
Dr Powell has been involved with organ donation throughout his career. His interest developed during his four years as a registrar in nephrology and general medicine at the Sheffield Kidney Institute in Yorkshire. Working in anaesthesia and ICU after that provided further opportunities to care for all aspects of both donors and recipients. He believes passionately that organ and tissue donation relies upon community engagement and trust, or there can be no donors and no life-saving transplantation.
He is also thoroughly committed to working with Western Australia’s transplant community in creating a sustainable, world-class service for its residents.
Clinical Nurse Manager WA — Melissa Smith
Melissa Smith is a registered nurse and her qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing, a Postgraduate Diploma in ICU nursing and a Diploma of Counselling.
Raised in the Gascoyne region of WA, Melissa has worked in Adult ICU Management and Education, in WA and in the UK.
She began working at DonateLife as a Donor Coordinator in 2000, also handling various positions such as Education Officer and Acting Manager.
Melissa was appointed Clinical Nurse Manager in May 2013.
She believes we all have the right to make a decision about donation and have it respected.
