Lucas had a liver transplant

Lucas describes himself as a geeky, introverted guy. He shares his enthusiasm for technology, Lego and video games through blogging—and has generously opened up about his health journey there as well. 

Through his writing, you learn that Lucas has wonderful perspective and humility. Reflecting on his life’s defining moments, he notes that very few truly qualify as ‘life-changing’.  

He limits this list to meeting and marrying his wife Despina, the births of their 2 daughters, and receiving a liver transplant.  

‘I wouldn’t be here today with Des and our 2 young daughters if it wasn’t for the donor, and their family’s choice,’ shares Lucas. 

Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis in 2010, Lucas learned early that the chronic, life-threatening disease would probably require a liver transplant. He began a routine of tests, MRIs and medication, managing his condition for nearly a decade. In 2019, his health declined rapidly.  

Liver failure set in, bringing severe jaundice, intense itching, vomiting and overwhelming fatigue. Already hospitalised for treatment, Lucas received the call that would change his life. 

 Lucas remains deeply grateful for the additional years he’s shared with his young familyand continues to reflect on his transplant and the donor’s gift through his blog. He writes, ‘It is a cruel situation that this extraordinarily positive change and source of happiness and hope for me and my family has come from a source of tragedy and sorrow for the donor and their family.  

‘Somebody, somewhere died in order for me to receive this organ and a second chance at life. I promise that I will not take it for granted.’
