Victorians urged to make their decision count via simple online system this DonateLife Week

New research reveals that while 66 per cent of Victorians are willing to donate their organs and tissue, just one in five have joined the Australian Organ Donor Register. At the same time, 74 per cent of Victorians would accept a lifesaving transplant.

This DonateLife Week (July 30 – August 6) DonateLife Victoria is urging locals make their decision count to help the 1,400 Australians currently waiting on organ transplants across the country.

A new, simplified registration platform was recently unveiled, allowing people to register their donation decision in less than a minute using just their Medicare details.

Dr Rohit D’Costa, DonateLife Victoria State Medical Director said “Registering as an organ and tissue donor and having the chat with your loved ones about your decision is the single best thing you can do to help more people receive life changing transplants.”

“Even if you previously registered your decision via your Victorian driver’s licence, you need to register your decision on the national Register. The new online platform makes it even easier to record your donation decision,” he added.

Registering your donation decision is important because it leaves your family in no doubt of your intent to save lives as an organ and tissue donor.

Registration counts, with nine in 10 families agreeing to donation proceeding when their loved one is a registered donor. Only 12 per cent of Victorians know if their partner or family have registered a donation decision.

In 2016, a record breaking 406 lives were saved thanks to the generosity of 140 deceased Victorian donors and their families. Victoria had the highest number of deceased donors nationally, contributing 28 per cent to the total donor pool.

This year DonateLife has teamed up with the AFL and FFA to promote organ and tissue donation awareness. Keep an eye out for registration opportunities at matches across Victoria this DonateLife Week.
