Tribute to Mark Colvin

The Organ and Tissue Authority extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mark Colvin, who sadly passed away on Thursday 11 May 2017. Mark was a part of the daily life of many Australians, helping to make sense of the world through his extraordinary career in journalism and in particular as presenter of the ABC’s flagship current affairs program, PM.

Proceedings paused yesterday at the DonateLife Forum, attended by more than 300 representatives from the donation, transplantation and community sectors, to pay tribute to Mark Colvin’s advocacy for organ donation.

Generously, Mark shared his own personal story on the hardships faced by too many Australians waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant, and the life-changing gift of a kidney transplant by a living donor, was movingly told in the critically acclaimed Four Corners program filmed in 2013, ‘A Gracious Gift’ (http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2013/04/08/3729893.htm).

Mark’s advocacy for increasing Australia’s organ and tissue donation rates, to enable more lives to be saved, was greatly appreciated. His story motivated many Australians to discuss and register their own decisions to become organ and tissue donors.
