Bereavement support services
DonateLife Victoria's specially trained Donation Specialist Coordinators (DSCs) provide as much support and information as the donor's family needs throughout the donation process.
After the donation, with the family's permission, the family is sent a bereavement pack with information about the outcome of their loved one's donation. This includes non-identifying information about the recipients, reading materials on coping with grief and details about DonateLife Victoria's bereavement support services. The family is provided with the option of free of charge counselling and support services with our bereavement counsellor.
Health professional education
The DonateLife Victoria Education Program provides ongoing professional education and training services to healthcare professionals, university undergraduate and postgraduate medical, nursing and paramedic students. DonateLife Victoria also facilitates the Australasian Donor Awareness Program (ADAPT) which provides specialised training and continuing education to a range of health professionals working in the organ, eye and tissue donation.
The Professional Education Package (PEP) focusses on education and training to assist health professionals to sensitively support potential donor families in acute grief and conducting the family conversation discussing the option of organ and tissue donation. The PEP will provide nationally coordinated education on how to manage conversations with families about the potential for organ and tissue donation. It will provide staged training and sequential learning through the three units which include theoretical and practical training. The PEP includes ADAPT workshops, both medical and general, Family Donation Conversations (FDC): Core Module and Family Donation Conversations (FDC): Practical Module.
The education program aims to enhance individuals understanding, knowledge and skills of issues and practices surrounding organ and tissue donation. Education delivery is tailored specifically to the audiences needs and involves diverse and interactive education and training resources. These include training modules, workshops, case reviews and scenarios, simulation activities.
