How to get involved

How can you get involved? This resource is for any organisation that engages with young Australians and may include:

  • Secondary schools
  • Universities/ student clubs
  • TAFEs and colleges
  • Sports teams
  • Dance clubs
  • Volunteer organisations
  • Youth-focused companies and small businesses
  • Youth-oriented media e.g. youth radio stations or university newspapers/magazines
  • Youth community groups- PCYC, churches.

Some activities you can organise to engage young people are listed below:

          1. Trivia night featuring organ and tissue donation related questions to raise awareness. Brochures and fact sheets can be placed on tables.
          2. Organise a sporting game/carnival with an information stall – contact us to order printed materials. The main focus of the event is to highlight the importance of organ and tissue donation and the number of lives that can be saved or improved from just one donor.
          3. Community awareness walks/fun runs engaging the local population, using physical activity and social engagement as an opportunity to discuss organ and tissue donation.
          4. Battle of the Bands/ talent quest.
          5. Information film evening with a local health or university organisation.
          6. Dance competition.
          7. Art/design exhibition in which artists/designers are encouraged to explore and depict emotions and themes surrounding organ and tissue donation.
          8. Short film festival in which applicants are encouraged to explore and depict emotions and themes surrounding organ and tissue donation.
          9. Play/drama performance.
          10. Creative writing competition.
          11. Organise a flash mob.
          12. Youth forum- invite recipients/donor families to speak about their experience.
          13. Promotion through local organisations – clothing stores, restaurants, entertainment venues etc.
          14. A local BBQ/sausage sizzle or picnic day
          15. An information stall at a busy location (such as a shopping centre or sporting venue, hospital or University campus)
          16. Local radio station broadcasting a segment on organ and tissue donation, using the DonateLife Book of Life to talk about some positive stories from donor families and those who have received an organ or tissue transplant. Read the DonateLife Book of Life.
          17. Local newspaper publication, community newsletter or local online forum reporting on DonateLife Week 2012, the events that are happening around the community during the community awareness week, or general information about organ and tissue donation.
          18. Those who have a personal experience of organ and tissue donation should be encouraged to submit stories of hope to the Book of Life on the DonateLife website.
