At tonight’s final of the Westfield Football Federation Australia (FFA) Cup, Minister for Aged Care and Minister for Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt AM, will award the ‘DonateLife Save of the Cup’ trophy to the best goalkeeper of the 2017 series.
This year marks the first time that the FFA has partnered with the Australian Government to promote DonateLife and encourage donor registration.
In an emotional tribute, two special children will present the match ball to the finals team captains from Sydney Football Club and Adelaide United at the Allianz Stadium, Sydney.
Maddi Bourke’s mum Suzette saved the lives of six people through her generous gift of organ donation. Maddi will be joined by two-year-old Aiden Neale, the youngest person in the world to receive a liver transplant, at just five days old.
“Throughout the series, the FFA has embraced the DonateLife message and inspired the football community to join the team of registered organ and tissue donors,” said Minister Wyatt.
The DonateLife ‘Save of the Cup’ trophy is the culmination of a competition throughout the series in which fans voted for the ‘best save’ from each round.
“I congratulate FFA CEO David Gallop AM and his team, FFA DonateLife Ambassador Archie Thompson, Caltex Socceroos goalkeeper Danny Vukovic and all the teams and their supporters who have generously put organ and tissue donation centre field.”
Transplant recipients shared their stories with the football community through digital storytelling developed and delivered by FFA on its social media channels, and honoured their donors by presenting match balls at games throughout the season.
“Representing the most popular team participation sport in the country, and the largest club participation sport, the FFA’s partnership with DonateLife has provided a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of registering and sharing our donation decisions with our families,” Minister Wyatt said.
“We all have the opportunity to one day save lives. A few minutes of your time can make a lifetime of difference to others in the future. Remember that just one organ donor can save up to 10 lives, so join the Australian Organ Donor Register at donatelife.gov.au.”
