Victoria leads the way in organ donation in 2016
A record breaking 406 lives have been saved thanks to the generosity of 140 deceased Victorian donors and their families in 2016.
These latest figures* show Victoria had the highest number of deceased donors nationally, contributing 28 per cent to the total donor pool.
There was an 11 per cent increase on 2015 Victorian donor numbers (126 donors in 2015), and a 20 per cent increase in the number of recipients receiving a life-saving transplant (337 recipients in 2015).
Little Amy Burrows-Dooley was one whose life was saved following a liver transplant in late 2016 when she was just over one year old. Australia-wide, she was one of 1,448 Australians who received an organ transplant, thanks to 503 organ donors nationally.
Amy’s mum, Alexandra Dooley is in awe of her daughter’s unknown donor family and those like them.
“I wasn’t wanting someone to die,” Ms Dooley said of the time the family spent waiting for a donor liver to become available for Amy, born with Biliary Atresia, “I was wishing for families to have the strength to say yes to donation.”
A further 87 Victorians received a transplant from a living donor (kidney or partial liver) in 2016 including 18 within the Australian Paired Kidney Exchange Program, an increase of 5 per cent on living donation the year prior in the state.
“The 2016 figures are something all Victorians can be proud of,” said DonateLife Victoria Clinical Network Manager, Leanne McEvoy.
“We are grateful to each and every family and their loved ones for the gift of donation, and little Amy is living proof of the difference these selfless decisions can make” Ms McEvoy said.
To continue the rise in organ donation, all Victorians are encouraged to consider and register their donation decisions on the Australian Organ Donor Register by visiting www.donatelife.gov.au/decide.
Victorian adults can sign up in minutes and share their decision with family and friends through social media.* The 2016 Australian Donation and Transplantation Activity Report including deceased and living organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes will be released in February.
