Get your team jersey on to spark a lifesaving conversation
The Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ken Wyatt AM MP is urging Australians to wear their favourite team colours for Jersey Day today (Friday September 2) to help spark a conversation about organ donation.
Mr Wyatt said Jersey Day is an initiative of the Nathan Gremmo Community Fund to encourage more Australians to discuss and register their donation decisions.
Nathan Gremmo died last year after being stuck by a car while crossing the road. At the young age of 13, Nathan saved the lives of six others as an organ donor – five young adults and a baby.
Hours before his untimely death, Nathan posted on Instagram ‘You only live once but if you do it right once is enough’.
“We can all honour Nathan’s legacy, and the legacy of all donors and their families, by discussing and registering our donation decisions,” said Mr Wyatt.
“By telling your friends and family about your decision, and encouraging them to do likewise, we can increase donation rates in Australia and save more lives.”
The National Rugby League, Football Federation Australia and Australian Football League are among those sporting groups supporting Jersey Day.
Teams taking part include Canterbury – Bankstown Bulldogs, St George Illawarra Dragons, Gold Coast Titans, Penrith Panthers, Canberra Raiders, North Queensland Cowboys, Cronulla Sutherland Sharks, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Perth Glory and the Carlton Football Club.
This year more than 960 Australians received a life-saving transplant as a result of the generosity of 329 organ donors and their families.
“These are wonderful results for our community, but there is still much to be done with more than 1,400 Australians on transplant waiting lists and a further 12,000 patients on dialysis,” said Mr Wyatt.
If you’ve not yet registered your donation decision, Jersey Day, is a good day to join the Australian Organ Donor Register.
Register online at donatelife.gov.au and #endthewait and share your decision with your family and friends.
