QLD Writing for Life Young writers Micro fiction competition 2015 winners announced

‘Fiction met fact’ this week as young writers who penned inspiring fictional stories about organ donation met a young teen whose real life will (hopefully very soon) be transformed by a caring stranger.

Young writers from all over Queensland took part in the challenge to step into the minds of someone waiting and wishing for a second chance at life on the transplant waiting list; or someone whose loved one had saved many lives.

By entering the first-ever DonateLife Queensland Writing For Life Microfiction Competition, they lent their voices to the appeal for greater awareness of organ and tissue donation.

Statewide winners were announced by award-winning playwright and author Debra Oswald at the Brisbane Writer’s Festival at the weekend (Sunday 6 September).

Ms Oswald, who admitted to a few tears while judging the entries, said she was inspired by the level of empathy and maturity shown by these young writers tackling such an emotive topic.

Fifteen-year-old Trinity Scott, from Albany Creek State High School in Brisbane, was overall statewide winner for her empathetic work titled Because of You. She received a prize package including family accommodation at Peppers Resorts, Broadbeach, the latest Kindle e-reader, movie, book and i-tunes vouchers. You can read Trinity Scotts winning entry.

Nicola Grobler, Whitsunday Anglican School, Mackay
