Tanya Major

Advocate and former Young Australian of the Year

"Your choice now can save a life.  I want to encourage every Australian to consider that a simple choice today can make a significant difference to someone else's life in the future.  You never know who might need a transplant... maybe even you or one of your friends and family."

Tania Major is a Kokoberra woman from the remote community of Kowanyama in Cape York Queensland.  She was the first ever university graduate from her community, attaining a Criminology degree from Griffith University, and in addition Tania holds a Masters degree in Public Policy from the University of Sydney.

Since 2002 Tania has publicly addressed many national and international forums, speaking on Indigenous and Youth affairs as these relate to remote communities, particularly those in Cape York, and in recognition of her efforts Tania was awarded Young Australian of the Year in 2007.  Tania's aim has been to bring the realities of life in many of these remote communities to the foreground of wider Australian thinking and to engage mainstream Australians in the collaborative challenge of seeking solutions to long standing problems.

Tania is currently the Spokesperson for GenerationOne and has established her own consulting company, focussing on her key areas of interest - Youth, Indigenous Affairs, and Training and Development.  In February 2011 Tania proudly became a DonateLife Ambassador and is committed to promoting community awareness of organ and tissue donation for transplantation.
