Dr Mal Washer, Chair of the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Board, today announced the appointment of Lucinda Barry as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority (AOTDTA).

Ms Barry brings to the position extensive experience and knowledge in health care. In her exemplary career, she has held senior leadership roles within government, in the public service, and in health service delivery.

“Ms Barry has an exceptional understanding of, and exposure to, health care policy and delivery, and of organ and tissue donation and transplantation matters in particular,” Dr Washer said.

“She brings a wealth of clinical knowledge from her positions as Director of Nursing at the National Capital Private Hospital in Canberra, Trauma Coordinator at the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she was integral in the implementation of the Victorian State Trauma System and on the frontline as a specialist Emergency nurse.”

“With an extensive network of stakeholders in the health sector, Ms Barry also has a keen appreciation and understanding of the importance of working in partnership and collaboration.”

Ms Barry has previously held executive positions within the health profession including Vice-president of the Australasian Trauma Society and the Emergency Nurses Association Victoria.

The AOTDTA works with states and territories, clinicians and the community sector to deliver the Australian Government’s national reform program to improve organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes in Australia.

“With around 1,000 Australians on the kidney transplant waiting list and 12,000 on haemodialysis at any given time, organ donation is an issue for the whole nation,” Dr Washer said.

“Ms Barry‘s appointment is further demonstration of the Government’s commitment to increasing donation rates in Australia.”
