Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt, today announced Dr Mal Washer as the inaugural chair of the newly established Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Board, effective 1 July 2017.
“Dr Washer is an extremely accomplished man. He was a member of Federal Parliament and has forty years’ experience as a general practitioner, holding Bachelor degrees in Medicine and Surgery,” Minister Wyatt said.
“He brings with him a wealth of clinical, business and management experience, having served as Council President of the Alcohol and Other Drug Council of Australia, and Chair of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation, in addition to being the founder and director of a number of successful private companies.”
The Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Board has been established to govern the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority. Its creation was a recommendation of the Review of the implementation of the national reform agenda on organ and tissue donation and transplantation conducted by Ernst and Young.
The Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority Amendment (New Governance Arrangements) Act 2016, which establishes the new governance arrangements for the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority, was passed in the Australian Parliament in November 2016.
The Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority is responsible for implementing the Australian Government’s national reform agenda for organ and tissue donation for transplantation.
