Giving The Gift of Life

Artback NT: Arts Development and Touring is excited to present Gift of Life, an innovative performance highlighting the importance of organ and tissue donation. Following on from successful tours in 2012 and 2013, this special story will travel to venues and communities from Perth to Broome in September 2014.

A heartfelt and informative story of an Indigenous woman who is struggling with end stage kidney disease,

Gift of Life follows her journey through the difficult process of dialysis to receiving a kidney transplant. It is a story about family, loss and love and the extraordinary gift of giving through organ and tissue donation.

The tour is sponsored and assisted by the Organ and Tissue Authority through a Community Awareness Grant and is supported by DonateLife NT and WA.

DonateLife WA State Medical Director, Dr Bruce Powell said the play was a great fit for the national DonateLife community awareness and education program which aims to promote awareness and support for organ and tissue donation.

"We hope that after watching the play, audiences will understand the importance of donation in their own community and to everyone touched by it, as well as the importance of discussing their donation decision with their family. We see this tour as a good opportunity to build relationships around the state, which can only help the process. We consider the ability to donate as something that should be in every West Australian’s reach."

Gift of Life was written by Ben Graetz, a Darwin based playwright, actor and director of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander and Germanic heritage. Ben developed the play, which centres on a young football player and a single mother, with young and Indigenous audiences in mind.

"A lot of Indigenous people are unaware that a kidney transplant is even an option. At a community level, the play has power to communicate an immediate message," Ben said.
