Family Donation Conversation Practical Module

The practical FDC workshop provides training and continuing education to a range of health professionals working in organ, eye and tissue donation. The workshops aim to provide increased skills and practice in having conversations with potential donor families about organ and tissue donation and ensuring that families are provided with sufficient information to make a proactive, informed and enduring donation decision.

Practical FDC workshops aim to provide participants with the opportunity to:

  • Reflect on learnings from the core FDC workshop
  • Identify and discuss the benefits of separating the conversations about death and donation
  • Prepare and plan a family donation conversation using a team approach
  • Practise the first conversation raising donation with a family
  • Practise responses to family concerns
  • Utilise tools to support learning and practice

Practical FDC workshops are facilitated by a national core group of trainers which include experienced intensivists, nurses, education coordinators and grief specialists from across the DonateLife Netowrk and Australia.

The practical FDC workshop was developed by the Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) with an experienced group of DonateLife clinicians and trainers in 2012.

NOTE: It is a pre-requisite requirement that participants attend a core FDC workshop before attending the practical FDC workshop. If you are interested in attending a workshop, please contact the DonateLife Agency in the host jurisdiction for details about the workshop. If you are a DonateLife Network staff member, consider contacting the Education Coordinator in your jurisdiction to discuss potential support to attend a workshop in another jurisdiction.
