Celebrating National Volunteer Week with Rachel Driscoll

Rachel Driscoll – Deakin University Medical Student and DonateLife Volunteer

At DonateLife Victoria, we value our volunteers every single day, helping in so many ways to get the message out across Victoria.  But in National Volunteers Week we want everyone to know!

Rachel Driscoll is in her last year of study for her medical degree at Deakin University in Geelong and has been a DonateLife Community Champion since 2013 – check out her motivation and story here.

“The motivation to get involved in promoting awareness for organ and tissue donation stems from patients I have spoken to during my years as a medical student, and the obvious shortage of organ donation in Australian hospitals,” Rachel said.

“Volunteering for DonateLife has been a highly rewarding experience, and has increased my passion regarding improving organ donation awareness in the community.

Rachel’s passion is reaching out to the younger generations, encouraging them to have the conversation with their families about their donation wishes.

“As a young person, organ donation and end-of-life interventions are not widely discussed, and the process of becoming an organ donor is not well understood. What I have taken away from this is that it is never too young to discuss organ donation with your family or partner.

“Helping DonateLife through volunteering has increased my understanding of many of the misconceptions held regarding organ donation in the general community, allowing these issues to now be addressed.

Rachel says giving back through volunteering has had other benefits for her medical career, like improving communication skills and knowledge about the values and religious beliefs that can impact on families’ decision-making.

“I am thankful I have had the opportunity to volunteer for DonateLife as it has opened my eyes to the state of organ and tissue donation in Australia. The impact of interacting with those people who have been directly affected by organ donation is highly rewarding,” Rachel concluded.
