Our role is to spearhead and be accountable for a new world's best practice national approach and system to achieve a significant and lasting increase in the number of life-saving and life-transforming transplants for Australians.

Our vision is for Australia to lead the world in organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes.

Our mission is to develop, build, monitor and improve national networks and systems for clinical practice, education and data analysis, and to build community awareness to improve family consent rates for organ and tissue donation.

The Authority is responsible for:

  • coordinating a national network of clinicians and other hospital staff dedicated to organ and tissue donation in hospitals across the country
  • manage a leading edge, world class national education program for health professionals
  • overseeing a new national network of state and territory organ and tissue donation agencies and set consistent national guidelines for their operations
  • introducing a national data and reporting system
  • leading ongoing community awareness and education programs
  • formulating national policies and protocols, including working closely with peak clinical and professional organisations in the development of consistent clinical practice protocols and standards
  • monitoring activity to support practice improvements and through continuous education improve the skills and knowledge of people involved in organ or tissue donation and transplantation services
  • implementing a national eye and tissue banking network.
